レナード・ノーマン・コーエン（Leonard Norman Cohen）。
1934年9月21日カナダで生まれ育ち、詩人・小説家、シンガーソングライターとして活躍を続けている彼は、コーエンという、ユダヤ教の祭司の系列に属するとされる名前からも、その風貌からも、すぐにユダヤ系であることがわかります。
1967年、ジュディ・コリンズがロンドンで、コーエンの作品「スザンヌ」を歌ってヒットさせたことで、一躍有名になった彼は、シンガー・ソングライターとしての活動の本拠をアメリカに定め、数々のヒットを放つようになります。ポップス界で「現代の吟遊詩人」と呼ばれるシンガー・ソングライターといえば、ドノヴァンとコーエン。どこかメルヘンティックなイメージのドノヴァンと、知的なコーエン。持ち味は違いますが、互いを詩人として認め合い、文通していた時期もあります。共に東洋思想に関心を寄せ、みずみずしい感性と実力と甘いマスクで多くのファンを魅了し、影響しあった二人ですが、どちらかといえば、コーエンがドノヴァンに与える影響の方が強かったと、私は感じています。
私がコーエンを好きになったのは、1984年に彼が発表したアルバム"Various Positions"を聴いたときです。アルバムに収められたどの作品も完成度が高く、そのメロディー、歌声、心の深奥から神に語りかえるような詩に深く魅かれて以来、私は、彼の初期の作品も聴くようになり、その活動をそっと見守るようになりました。80年代に来日した際には、日本人の恋人と一緒にNHKの番組に出演してインタヴューに答えていました。その後も、彼女と一緒に暮らしているのでしょうか。
1996年には臨済宗の和尚になったコーエンですが、その原点には、ユダヤの神へのハシディックな信仰があるように感じます。彼が熱唱するイディッシュの歌に、私は心を揺すぶられました。幾度かのイスラエルでの公演でも、ユダヤ人の聴衆の反響は非常に大きいものだったと聞いています。
今年77歳になるレナード・コーエンが老いてもなお魅力的で、その歌唱も深みを増していることはまことに喜ばしく、この繊細で、それでいてしたたかな詩人の健康と幸せを祈らずにはいられません。

今日ご紹介するのは、彼の代表的名曲として知られる "Hallelujah"（「神を称めたたえよ」の意）、76年にウィーンで歌われたイディッシュの民謡"Un As Der Rebbe Zingt"、そして、 80年代半ばの大ヒット曲となった"Dance Me to the End of Love"（90年代の演奏）です。
